What Shopify costs when you sell one product
You have one product, and you want a page where people can buy it. Everyone says to use Shopify, so you look up what Shopify costs.
Here is that sum for one product, in Australian dollars. Then the point where Shopify becomes the cheaper choice, because there is one.
What Shopify charges
Shopify's cheapest option with a full online store is called Basic. This is from its Australian pricing page on 15 October 2026:
- A$56 for each month if you pay monthly. That comes to A$672 over a year.
- A$50 for each month if you pay for the year up front. That comes to A$600.
- 1.7% + 30c on each online card sale, when you use Shopify Payments.
- An extra 2% on each sale if you use a different payment provider.
You pay for the store whether you sell a hundred or none.
What a gem charges
A gem is one product with its own page and checkout, on Trove Grove.
- A$12 for the year, paid once.
- 5% of the item price when it sells. We take none of the postage.
- Stripe's card fee, which goes to Stripe. On 15 October 2026 that was 1.65% + 30c for an Australian card.
The card fee is close to the same either way, so the sum below leaves it out.
The sum for one product
Say you sell 120 of a A$40 product in a year. That's ten every month, and A$4,800 of sales.
| Over the year | Shopify Basic | A gem |
|---|---|---|
| The store | A$600 | A$12 |
| Fee on sales | A$0 | A$240 |
| Total | A$600 | A$252 |
Shopify paid for the year up front. Card fees left out, because both sides pay them.
At that size, the gem costs A$348 less over the year.
When Shopify is cheaper
Our 5% grows with your sales. Shopify's store fee stays the same. So there is a point where Shopify wins.
Once one product sells more than A$11,760 in a year, Shopify Basic costs less than a gem.
Here is how we got that. A$600 take away A$12 leaves A$588. And A$588 is 5% of A$11,760.
Shopify also makes more sense once you sell lots of different products, or need its app store. If you have a handful of products, a trove puts up to 20 of them in one shop, from A$44 to A$99 for the year.
Before you choose
- Use a normal year of sales for the sum. Your best month will make any fee look small.
- Count our 5% on the item price only. If you charge A$9.50 postage, none of that is ours.
- Prices change. Check Shopify's pricing page and ours before you decide.
Put your product on its own page
A gem is one product with its own page and checkout, at A$12.00 for the year. We take 5% of the item price when it sells, and none of the postage. Applying takes a minute, and a person reads every application.
The next 10 sellers get their first gem's year free with the code FIRSTGEM, typed on the payment page, until 31 December 2026.
